And now, because my public expects it (please, let me hold on to my delusions), my 2002 Film Year-In-Review List(s).

The second ten, in alphabetical order: Second ten, in no particular order: "Changing Lanes", "Chicago", "Death to Smoochy", "Frida", "Kissing Jessica Stein", "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", "Minority Report", "Panic Room", "The Pianist", and "Unfaithful".

Special Jury Prizes to "Bowling for Columbine" and "Atanarjuat". In a year when I, unfortunately, saw very few foreign language films, Best Foreign Language Film goes to "Y Tu Mama Tambien".

If there's enough demand, I will expound on any or all of these selections, in public or in private, as called for by the situation. Otherwise, I'll likely rant about the Oscar nominees tomorrow.

(Oh, and a bottom five--which were not necessarily all bad, but which did piss me off to one degree or another: "About Schmidt", "Blade II", "Reign of Fire", "Spider-Man", and "Star Trek: Nemesis".)

...but find that I feel no animosity for the Academy this year. Not only did they not make any egregious oversights that I can tell (and keep in mind that 2002 was not a year in which I saw nearly as many movies as I'd hoped), but a few of their nominations--Christopher Walken in Catch Me If You Can and Queen Latifah for Chicago especially--actually surprised me for their savvy.

"Academy Award nominee Eminem." That's worth its weight in gold.

I won't let out a fanboy wail of robbery for Andy Serkis, but it is a pity that nobody seems able to give him any sort of solid award for his comprehensive efforts to create Gollum.
