Dec. 1st, 2006 08:42 amIt's the SNOWPACALYPSE!
You know, when it takes me $50 or more a week to fill my gas tank, or when I get dirty looks from blissfully self-content hybrid drivers, yeah, I have my doubts about owning a Big Giant SUV. But then a day like this happens and I make it from home to work without so much as a fishtail, and you know what? I rethink my position and realize that four wheel drive is AWESOME!
I love living in a place where weather like this is a possibility.

Date: 2006-12-01 03:22 pm (UTC)Rob and I were just talking this morning about which SUV owner we know might be willing to pick him up at the train station tonight. Because neither of our two little 4-door sedans are ideal vehicles for this weather.

Date: 2006-12-01 04:10 pm (UTC)Let's do the math...
Date: 2006-12-01 08:03 pm (UTC)At $50/tank and say you fill up 30 times a year, that's $1500. Now consider the number of "snowapacalypses" that occur each winter, maybe 10. So each "snowapacalypse" costs you about $150, but I'm forgetting something because you'd have to pay something even if you didn't drive a car that should go to a GA* meeting. It only costs us $25 per fill up (2000 Honda Civic), we can use that as a baseline, and halve the $150 to $75.
So the difference for you to owe a "Big Giant SUV" and commuting "without so much as a fishtail**" yestereday, was that it cost you an additional $75. I'll repeat that again. Your commute yesterday alone cost you an additional $75. Was it worth it?

**I didn't have any problems yesterday or today (I bought consumer reports suggested tires that make a huge difference.)
