In this case, there was something of a minor motivating event, but to strangle a metaphor:

Imagine a boulder precariously balanced at the top of a hill. Now imagine a butterfly lands on the boulder, which sends the boulder rolling down the hill toward oblivion. This motivating event was of less weight than the butterfly.

I'm going to get out of work today and pick up the new Fountains of Wayne record I somehow didn't realize was released this week. If that doesn't help I think I'm officially a lost cause.
