What the hell--I guess I forgot to actually post this after writing it.

September 29, 2001

OK, today was, again, boring as hell. Nut I'm going to tell you of the "other thing" I mentioned yesterday. The "death of irony" piece is getting pushed again until I'm writing at a time when I have more energy.

As you know if you've been reading for a while, I've been working for a company that does telephone-based social science research. I also, when I started in August, applied for a job with their technical support staff. I've been in contact with then HR recruiter from time to time since then, checking on the status of the job. Finally, one of the other HR people-the one who regularly works at the office in which I work-stopped by and told me that apparently the tech support department had hired a contract employee for that position without telling HR of it. So it looks like I'm SOL.

I am, justifiably (I think) pissed. After I found out, the question I asked more than one person was "Is this illegal, against company policy, or just sleazy?" The general response was "just sleazy". I think posting the opening, then filling it-not just from outside, but with a contractor-demonstrates extreme bad faith on their part. The question now becomes "Does HR have the power to get this contractor removed?" We shall see.

Not-really-rhetorical question of the day: should an utter lack of faith necessarily disqualify someone from joining the clergy?

Today's Link Of The Day is "Whad'Ya Know?" Michael Feldman is the host/writer/provocateur for this bit of public radio goodness. It's one part quiz show, one part musical variety show, on part comedy…and it's from Wisconsin. Find it in your area through the site, and listen and enjoy. http://www.notmuch.com
