Dammit, I'm getting old.

I must be. I almost led this off with "I gotta cut back on the late nights".

And I wrote the above line almost an hour ago. Schmuck.

I never really got Wes Anderson's "Rushmore"-most of my problem, I think, had to do with the fact that I didn't really like Max Fischer. As such, I walked into "The Royal Tenenbaums" with no small amount of trepidation. Boy, was that obliterated quickly, and replaced with joy. There is SO much joy in this film-it suffuses every frame and performance. I'm now more than willing to heap praise on Anderson-this is a funny, moving, funny, quirky, funny, outrageous, funny movie where everything works-the look, the shots, the costumes, the sets, the words, the score, and, especially, the performances. Gene Hackman and Anjelica Huston are outstanding, Gwyneth Paltrow deserves the Oscar she got for "Shakespeare In Love" for her work here, Owen and Luke Wilson are great, it's all just wonderful. I'm now going to have to go back and see "Bottle Rocket" and "Rushmore" (again) to figure out what I was missing.

Not a hell of a lot beyond that-a little more shopping, including picking up the film "Panic" on DVD (I haven't seen it, but Ebert raved about it more than once, and it was only $9.99 at Best Buy, including commentary) and the screenplay to "The Man Who Wasn't There".
