Steven Spielberg is a fucking pussy and "War of the Worlds" is absolutely AWFUL.

Not everything needs to end with a hug.

My viewing companion and I compiled, easily, a list of 20 actors who would have been a better fit for the lead role in this film. Here they are, alphabetically:

Independence Day is significantly better in nearly every category.

That's very disappointing to hear - the previews really had me hoping. But, as I remarked to more than one person: "It could be cool, but I'm worried about the interaction between the possibility of Spielberg's overdirecting and the certainty of Cruise's overacting."

Last Samurai was good, but less because of Tom and more because of Ken Watanabe and solid direction.

The main character needs an Everyman quality that Tom Cruise, by dint of being the world's biggest movie star, sort of lacks by definition. Of all the people on the list, Paxton is perhaps the one who best typifies this attribute.
