After spending the majority of the past two days either fighting with or on hold with UPS, I've come to the conclusion that if I have a choice in the matter, I would not let them deliver a package across the street. And their hold music always starts at the same point, "midway" through a musical phrase, to make you think it's constantly flowing. It's not. And it repeats after approximately 41 seconds.

I did manage to spend a bunch of time nosing around DeadMalls.com while on hold, and I was entertained.

And I'm reading this lovely article on Salon, and the interviewee is saying a whole bunch of stuff about God and intelligent design that I've been saying for years. I still think Bill Maher's view on religion is closest to mine, though (well, without the openness to possibility that Maher states).

Why is UPS such a hassle? I just don't get it. The last thing that I ordered from them caused me two days of annoyance. I wasn't home when they tried to deliver it the first three times...and on the third attempt, the notice was marked for "after 5pm", but they tried to deliver at 4:30...fuckers. So after that, I took the "pick up from customer center" notice to the customer center. The center is off in the weirdest place, north of downtown LA and east of Chinatown...it's off the reservation. After waiting, they determined that the package had gone back out on the truck again for delivery...for some reason...even though they are only supposed to have three attempts. So I came back the next day, waited an hour for them to track down the fucking thing, only to find out that it was again on the truck to go out...except that they caught it before the truck left and were able to grab it for me, so I did not wait in vain.

Sigh.

Aside from many trips to the UPS customer center in L.A. which are exactly in line with Danielle's experience, I have had three ridiculous torments since I moved to Seattle. Here, the pick up center is in the middle of nowhere- there actually isn't even a name to the part of town that it is in. It's address is on Airport Way, and yet it is 25 minutes by car from the airport and there isn't a street called Airport Way anywhere near the airport. It is actually designed to confuse and make people get lost. I've had to go there to pick up packages on several occasions, and all I can say is that from the city of Seattle it will take you one hour on three buses to get there, and the buses to get back only run once every forty-five minutes. You're looking at a total commitment of at least three hours (when you factor in the time it takes them to find your package). The only positive thing I can say is that, in Seattle, there is a dog named Red who is old and red and he loves anyone who is waiting for a bus to get back into town. He sat and waited with me all three times. I still don't know where he actually lives.
