I beseech thee again, Intarwub, pray advise:

Someone with more expertise than me tell me what digital camera to buy. I want something nice and small so I can carry it everywhere. I'm thinking about the Canon PowerShot 800IS, but that might just be because I sort of but not really work for Canon. Would I be better off with a Sony or somesuch?

Also, is there someplace in particular I should purchase from? My plan was Best Buy for the points.

You would not be better off with Sony. Canon & me: BFF!

Are you looking for a pure point & shoot camera, or do you want more manual control?

Hell, I don't know. Seriously, the size is the big determining factor, followed by my constant desire to always buy as far ahead of the curve as possible so I can wait longer to upgrade. I was thinking about the PowerShot SD 900 (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=14220), but it was pointed out to me that for the kind of photos I take (http://www.flickr.com/photos/41428359@N00/), image stabilization is a good idea.

I have an Olympus myself and totally love it. I'm afraid I do not have any knowledge of the Canon PowerShot - we bought it for my Mom for Christmas but she actually has not taken it out of the box yet. :(

Let us sit in front of the web together sometime, and we can use our Consumer Reports account to check on the best reviewed ones.

If you are feeling intrepid, you should message my friend Lisa on MySpace (first person in my top 12). She has a great digital camera--it's small, but it has a ton of awesome features (she has a background in photography and was choosy about what she wanted). Ask her what she has...

Olympus 7.1 mega pixel. Sleek, inexpensive and good quality.

Just sayin'.

Canon and I are also BFF.
I bought in March 2006 the Ixus 55, 5.0 megapixels with, then, the biggest screen available for those small buggers. I Love it!
It goes everywhere with me, takes awesome pictures and the battery lasts for ever.

Either the SD800 IS or the SD700 IS would be good choices. Highly rated, the big difference between the two is that the SD800 has a wide 28mm field of view. IS helps keep the images free of blur due to camera shake but doesn't freeze motion of your subjects.

Another possible choice is the Fuji F30 (especially for indoor photography). But you have to deal with xD media which, quite frankly, can be a deal-breaker sometimes.

For ordering hardware, I always buy from B&H. http://www.bhphotovideo.com
