Anybody remember "compassionate conservatism"? Do you think President Bush does?

I don't think that's a fair question, since he never really did.

"Compassionate conservatism" means "I feel your pain but won't do anything to stop causing it."

I honestly don't think he cares about our pain.

I said "feel," not "care."

Although the alcohol probably dulls that, as well.

Oh my, did I accuse our Great and Noble Leader of falling off the wagon? I suppose it's more comforting to think he fucked up this badly due to booze instead of him doing all this stone sober.

I stopped believing his compassionate conservatism thing back when he was governor. Supposedly, in response to the news that convicted murderer Karla Faye Tucker had become a born-again Christian in jail and that it should perhaps influence the governor's decision on commutation of her death sentence, what with the idea of forgiveness and salvation and all, Gov. Bush replied, "Her soul belongs to Jesus, but her ass belongs to me."

That may be apocryphal, but I believe it.

OK, I'm just a black-hearted little sumbitch, but I sort of like that.

That may be apocryphal, but what is documented was his later assessment of her on Larry King, as reported by Tucker Carlson:

"I didn't meet with Larry King either when he came down for it. I watched his interview with [Tucker], though. He asked her real difficult questions, like 'What would you say to Governor Bush?' "

"What was her answer?"

"Please," Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, "don't kill me."

Nope. Am ded. Died in a cholera outbreak in 1898.

You might be the only person who'll get this, so I'll bring it up here: Am I the only one who thinks the whole Lane Kiffin firing sets up really well for him to walk into Denver and set up shop as Shanahan's heir apparent and then spend the next fifteen years making Oakland's life hell?

Would that not be awesome?!?

I keep hearing Kiffin might be headed to Syracuse. I can't decide how I feel about that.
