I lost an uncle today.

Sounds kind of funny when said that way, like I'll find him if I check behind the couch. Allow me to restart.

One of my uncles died today.

Well, it's a bit more complicated than that, I suppose. See, here's the deal. The late James Cashin (?-November 10, 2001) was theĀ…companion of my Aunt Darlene since approximately 1966. I've known him all my life. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with a particularly virulent form (metastatic esophageal) of cancer. The doctors said he had maybe a year, but the long-term prognosis was, in my dad's dark terms, "get your affairs in order". Apparently when this diagnosis came down, he and my aunt finally got married (reasons for why they hadn't done so years ago are both obscure and private). My parents and I only found out about the marriage today, when we received word of his death.

I thought Jim was a decent chap, all in all. My dad, for reasons I don't entirely know, wasn't overly fond of him. And my aunt loved him, which was the important thing.

We will not be traveling back to the ancestral home on the East Coast for the funeral-none of us can spare the time or expense, and my aunt said it wasn't necessary.

Little else today. Back to work tomorrow.

Today's Link Of The Day is Perseus, your home for ancient texts on the web. Ever searched in vain for that untranslated quotation for Plato's "Republic"? Your prayers are answered. http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/
