Dialogue that has probably never happened, except in my head, imagined most recently at the conclusion of this evening's activities:

"Is he kidding?"
"I've known him for many, many years, and I've figured out this much: When he's talking about himself, he's always kiddingÂ…and he's never kidding."

So, I, like, got some stuff today. Sweaters, jeans, shirts, shows, assorted others, Seasons 2 of "The Sopranos" on DVD, and "Civilization III".

"Civilization III" will be the end of me. I started playing it tonight and I could just see the lost hours stretch out in front of me.

Tomorrow is spent, at least partially, on returning the clothes I got that I didn't want, and buying the DVDs I wanted but didn't get (with the "Almost Famous: Bootleg" being first on the list).

Speaking of Cameron Crowe, I saw "Vanilla Sky" tonight. It turned my brain, as Harlan Ellison would say, into prune-whip yogurt. There's a lot of the more plotcentric parts of "The Matrix" in there, as well as an even bigger piece of "Total Recall", all remixed by David Lynch. Cruise is very good in a movie he's in every scene of. The supporting cast (specifically Jason Lee, Kurt Russell, Timothy Spall, and Cameron Diaz) are very good. And then there's Penelope CruzÂ…. I'd never seen one of her pictures before, and I had, frankly, kind of wondered what the fuss was about. Now I know-she's not bad. I could try to give you a plot synopsis, but I don't think I have that many words in me. I do believe I enjoyed this one more than my companions for the evening. Anyway, I do recommend it, but you have to be in the right state of mind-the "right state of mind" being, I think, "absolutely unprepared for anything".

Today's Link Of The Day was going to be something else entirely, until I found this transcription of an e-mail fight between Mark Brazill, a producer on "That '70s Show", and "Undeclared" creator Judd Apatow. These are angry, angry men. http://www.well.com/~doctorow/laundry.txt

Great email exchange between Apatow and Brazill (minus any evidence, I'm in Apatow's camp...Brazill's emails smack of an arrested development in the high school years).

With hindsight and with Dana's help figuring out a few things, I can upgrade my perception of "Vanilla Sky" to 7, maybe 7.5, although I still have reservations about a few things. I thought Cruise was too showy, his smile and laughter too much of a crutch. I think his character is incredibly complex, but that Cruise flattened him out a bit. And somehow, I think he overplayed the makeup; his performance seemed to be about the disfigurement rather than the emotions of the disfigurement.

Jason Lee, in hindsight, continues to rule.
